Concept –

Journey with Banaras
Banaras has always held a special place in my artistic journey, standing as my most cherished
subject for painting. During my college years, my visit to Banaras marked a profound shift in
my approach. I was captivated by the mystical perspectives of its high steps, ancient temples,
and the vibrant activities unfolding at the Ganga ghats. The invisible Ganga stretching into
the distance, veiled in fog, and the ghostly presence of hazy boats left an indelible impression
on me.
In 1985, my dedication to capturing the essence of Banaras was rewarded with the Governor’s
Award in watercolor painting. The subject of my acclaimed piece was none other than the
iconic Banaras ghat. My mentor, the esteemed watercolorist Prof. Ganesh Haloi, lauded my
work as “Excellent,” a momentous affirmation that remains a highlight of my artistic career.
Since then, Banaras ghat has recurrently surfaced as a central theme in my paintings.
However, the view of Banaras ghat has evolved significantly through the lens of my
subconscious mind. Although I revisit Banaras frequently, I have never sketched on-site.
Instead, I rely on my inner vision to translate the city’s essence onto paper. Layering colors to
create forms that align with my compositional instincts, my paintings manifest as boundless
and untouched. Eschewing outlines, they are surrounded by open white spaces that amplify
their ethereal quality
