Concept –
I am a traveller and a Nature lover. The surroundings in which I grew up nurtured my
love for our traditions and cultures. Music, art, films and travelling influenced my outlook
and built an affinity for Nature in my growing years. The exposure helped me get close
to the beauty of openness to experience. My experiences started accumulating through
my travels. Visiting different places have opened doors to the magnitude and power of
exposure. It became my prime source of inspiration. Getting introduced to different
people, cultures and art forms through travelling helped me a lot to rethink my views on
people, places and lifestyles and their unique mutual inter-relationship. During my
travel, I keep on drawing and sketching the life around not only to document but also to
get a deeper knowledge of the life within. Thus my works are more site specific and
plein-air paintings than common studio practice. I experiment with different mediums
such as watercolour, pen & ink, pastels, and colour pencils and so on. But my subjects
have always been Nature as well as my surroundings. The impressionist movement of
the 19th century has been immensely inspiring for me.
Travelling has also made me aware about the fast disappearance of old architectures
and landscapes. I have witnessed many such disappearances in my home town,
Kolkata as well as my current city, Hyderabad. The fascination for these landscapes,
architectures and their history made me document them through my drawings and
sketching.
While exploring the cities I lived in, I have always tried to capture the essence of the
place by finding its history. The old architectures with historical values which give the
city its character are now being replaced by modern buildings. Gradually the cities are
turning into a monotonous jungle of concrete. To save the memories of those
monuments I started documenting them through my drawings and paintings. Eventually
making me look for them and study them to preserve their long forgotten history. I also
interact and enquire about my findings from the locals to get their thoughts and ideas
about these changes as well as about my work. This in a way helps me to understand
the society.
